What We Do

Our organization is focused on Chongqing Municipality. We are available to assist adoptees in their search from any district of Chongqing and we can advise and direct adoptees to the appropriate searcher or organization from all regions of China.

The Roots of Love will also finance any birth parents DNA test from any Province in China.

The Roots of Love works with multiple professional searchers in China. When a searcher finds a biological relative who needs to take a DNA test, we cover the costs and test them through autosomal test (23Mofang that get upload to GEDmatch database).
We are also working on ways to be able to help you enter adoptees DNA into the National Police database, If needed we can also provide a STR/paternity/CODIS-type test.
No matter which database is used, adoptees will always receive birth relative contact information for free, should a close match be made. This is our promise to you!

More information about the process and what steps to follow for a birth family search can be found on our Searching page.

Street vendors in Chongqing read posters of searching adoptees from our Fall 2021 group search.

At the end of 2021, we organized our first Chongqing-wide search with one of our partnered private searchers. Our searcher visited 12 districts and counties for two months, and we were able to DNA test over 20 birth families. From this search, we have matched a couple of adoptees with their families. The remaining families are waiting for their match! You can view them on our public spreadsheet.

From May 2021 to 2023, we have tested over 50 Chinese birth families. We not only DNA test relatives that our searchers find, but we also will cover the testing fees for any birth family that contacts us directly or is requested by an adoptee or adoptive family. Finding and matching birth relatives is truly a collective community effort.

While planning for our 2020 summer trip to Chongqing (before the pandemic suddenly canceled it), we were arranging for a DNA collection event in Chongqing City. This event would have allowed for birth families to give and register their DNA on-the-spot. Based on the success of similar DNA drives in other provinces, we were excited to host the first one in Chongqing for international adoptees. To advertise the event, we had put together a colorful poster featuring 40 adoptees of different ages, male and female, adopted from all over Chongqing Municipality.

In addition to the DNA event, we had anticipated searching on-the-ground for several weeks. Once China reopens to foreign tourists again, we will continue on with these plans.

June 2022: We hosted two unique adoptee-led conferences with adoptee speakers in reunion with birth relatives.

September 2022: We, along with our friends at Nanchang Project, held two workshops at Chinese Heritage Camp in Colorado. The topic was how to search for birth relatives in China, and the slideshow presentation can be accessed at the top of our Searching page.

In present day 2024, we are working on a few projects involving additional searching in Chongqing and Chinese social media campaigns. As well than a in person trip to Chongqing.

We have put together our first video, which features Chongqing adoptees, to spread on Chinese social media! The version below is the Western version — a longer version is currently on Chinese social media. Contact us if you would like to participate a video project!
